Back in 1879, the first locomotive train etched its way through a new patch of prairie. With the expansion of the rail line, a little five-year-old settlement was propelled into existence as the town of Freeman, South Dakota.
Today, Freeman stands as a flourishing home to just over 1,300 residents, with an assortment of quality business establishments, diverse industries, and beautiful green spaces.
Located along U.S. Highway 81, the footprint of our little town spans the highway and includes an impressive downtown business district. We serve as a regional healthcare hub and are centrally located between Sioux Falls, Yankton, and Mitchell. Both interstate highways that cross the state from east to west and north to south are just a half-hour’s drive.
With a sprawling historical museum, two K-12 schools, several annual festivals, access to local produce, and a love for the arts, Freeman is a wonderful place to visit and an even better place to call “home.” We value education, history, art, good food, celebrations, and the rural countryside.
Even with an appealing array of amenities, it’s actually the people who make Freeman the special community that it is. Here, you’ll notice an incredible volunteer spirit and a willingness to serve others. Our people come together for music, theatric productions, and sports; they also come together in times of need.
Whether you’re visiting as a guest, considering taking up residence here, or even looking for the perfect location to launch or expand your business, we welcome you to join us in Freeman, South Dakota!
