Rural Leaders Convene to Build Business-Ready Downtowns

Dell Rapids, SD – August 5, 2025 — Thirty-eight rural leaders and resource providers from South Dakota, North Dakota, and Iowa gathered in Dell Rapids on July 22–23 for the Dakota Resources Thriverr Gathering, focused on answering one bold question: How might community leaders help build business-ready Downtowns?

The two-day gathering was filled with hands-on learning, real-world case studies, and powerful peer-to-peer connections. Participants explored what it truly means to be “business-ready” — from revitalizing empty storefronts to enhancing walkability and leveraging creative placemaking strategies. Sessions included insights from the AARP Livable Communities team, design professionals from ISG, and local leaders from Hartford, Lennox, and Centerville who shared successful downtown transformations.

One highlight was the “Walk with Us” tour of downtown Dell Rapids, presented by Kirsten Gjesdahl of Downtown Brookings. During this workshop participants learned how to assess their own Main Streets through the lens of design, safety, and business potential. Many attendees walked away with new tools, renewed confidence, and even plans to apply for grant funding.

“The facilitation was incredible, and Dakota Resources encouraged engagement and collaboration,” said one participant. Freeman's Economic Development Coordinator added, “I now know where to start, where to find the resources and I feel confident guiding the next phase of our Main Street project."

Dakota Resources Thriverr Gatherings serve as a vital catalyst for rural progress — equipping leaders with the tools, ideas, and partnerships needed to activate thriving, business-ready communities. Dakota Resources upcoming Thriverr Gathering will focus on rural public policy in Murdo on November 12-13, 2025.
